Amazon Referral Fees Explained: Category, Fee Base and Profit
Learn how to identify the Amazon referral-fee category, apply percentage or minimum fees and keep referral proceeds separate from actual profit.
Read the fee entry before using a percentage
Amazon’s US schedule has flat rates, whole-price bands and rates applied to different portions of price. These are different calculations. A flat-rate example can use sales price × rate; a banded example must first establish which rule applies.
The category classification also matters. A product presented in a broad electronics shopping category may have a more specific fee classification. Save the category shown in the fee preview for the actual SKU rather than relying on the name you use internally. Category and calculation notes, checked September 5, 2026
For examples of two different whole-price thresholds, see clothing fees and the category-specific $10 threshold.
Define the sales price consistently
Amazon includes the item price, shipping charged to the buyer and gift wrapping in the referral base. Use the charged amounts for the sale being modeled. Do not subtract the postage you paid from that base; postage is a separate business cost. Official fee-base definition
For a simple flat-rate category, write:
Referral fee = greater of (total sales price × category rate) or category minimum
Do not apply a minimum where the official category entry has none. Nor should you add it to the percentage fee: a minimum is a floor, not an extra fixed charge.
Worked example: a referral estimate versus contribution
Assume an illustrative product in a verified 15% category with a $0.30 minimum, an item price of $30 and $5 shipping charged to the buyer. No tax, advertising, refunds or special program fees are modeled.
| Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|
| Item plus buyer shipping | $35.00 |
| Referral fee: $35 × 15% | $5.25 |
| Remaining after referral | $29.75 |
| Product cost | −$10.00 |
| Actual postage | −$5.00 |
| Packaging | −$0.75 |
| Contribution before plan and other costs | $14.00 |
The percentage result exceeds $0.30, so the minimum does not alter the fee. Calling $29.75 “profit” would omit $15.75 of direct costs. Even $14 is contribution before plan costs, returns, overhead and income tax.
If you offer free shipping by changing the item price to $35, the assumed total remains $35. If you leave the price at $30 and remove the $5 shipping charge, you have reduced revenue. Those are different decisions and should occupy different spreadsheet rows.
Make the current calculator useful within its limits
The Amazon referral calculator has seven category options. It has no Clothing option and no FBA model. Check the displayed assumptions against your actual fee category before treating the result as useful. If the category or its price-band rule does not match, use the official schedule manually.
For FBA, obtain a product-specific estimate from Amazon’s Revenue Calculator. Keep referral fees and fulfillment charges on separate rows so a bundled estimate is not counted twice. Record whether any current surcharge is included in the fulfillment quote.
Reconcile one completed order
Before extending an estimate to hundreds of units, compare one recent settlement transaction with your calculation. Confirm the category, charged price, shipping, discounts, referral fee and any separate charges. Resolve the difference rather than adding an unexplained “miscellaneous fee” percentage.
Then save the checked date and repeat the review when the SKU, fulfillment method, price band or platform schedule changes. A correct formula with an outdated category rate still gives the wrong forecast.
FAQ
What is an Amazon referral fee?
It is a selling charge based on the product’s fee category and total sales price, subject to any category minimum. Selling-plan and fulfillment costs are separate.
Does the referral calculator show my complete profit?
No. Its current scope is referral-only with limited categories, no Clothing option and no FBA calculation. Account for all other selling and product costs separately.
Do Amazon’s price bands always work the same way?
No. Some categories apply one rate to the whole sales price; other schedule entries explicitly apply rates to portions. Read the wording for the actual fee category.
