How Much Does Etsy Take? US Fee Basics and Order Reconciliation
See what Etsy takes on a $100 US order, then account for shipping, buyer tax, listing quantities and advertising.
Know which fee pays for which step
Etsy charges for listings and transactions separately from Etsy Payments processing. For US Etsy Payments, the processing schedule is 3% plus $0.25. Other countries differ. Etsy fee overview, payment-processing schedule.
For one simple US order, the no-tax, no-ad planning formula is:
Standard fees ≈ 9.5% × (item + charged shipping + gift wrap) + $0.45.
The $0.45 combines one $0.20 listing allocation and the fixed $0.25 processing amount. Actual fee-line rounding can differ by a cent from rounding this combined expression once. Multiple quantities or listing renewals require additional attention.
Worked order with shipping and buyer tax
Suppose an illustrative physical item sells for $100, shipping charged is $6, and the buyer's separately collected tax is $8.48. Assume no ads, one listing charge and no other seller fees.
For a US seller, the transaction-fee base excludes the buyer sales tax, but payment processing includes it. Etsy's transaction and processing bases.
| Fee line | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Listing allocation | One charge | $0.20 |
| Transaction | $106 × 6.5% | $6.89 |
| Processing | $114.48 × 3% + $0.25 | $3.68 |
| Total | Sum of rounded lines | $10.77 |
Seller revenue is $106, excluding the tax collected for remittance. If actual postage is $6, product cost $30 and packaging $1, contribution is:
$106 − $10.77 − $6 − $30 − $1 = $58.23.
This amount is before uncounted labor, overhead, returns and income taxes. The buyer-tax amount is an illustrative input; your actual amount depends on the order.
Listing fees are not always one fee per order
A single-item estimate allocates one listing charge to that sale. A multi-unit listing can incur additional quantity-related charges, and unsold listings can generate renewal costs. For a shop-wide view, count actual listing and renewal events during the period instead of multiplying one-order fees by sales and assuming that captures everything. Etsy listing rules.
Keep prior listing payments in the product's economics, but avoid subtracting the same charge twice from a later bank deposit. If an item takes several renewal periods to sell, its lifetime listing cost can exceed the one-charge assumption.
Add advertising only under the applicable rules
An attributed Offsite Ads order can carry a 15% or qualifying-shop 12% fee, subject to the per-order cap. That fee does not apply to every order merely because the shop is enrolled. Official Offsite Ads guide.
Use your actual attribution status. If a tool offers Share & Save, apply it only when the order qualifies for that program; a toggle cannot establish eligibility. Separate ad spending and other account costs from the baseline so that an unexplained difference can be traced to a specific line.
Match the calculator to your question
For one order, enter item price, quantity, product type and shipping charged and paid. Test the applicable ad scenario. For a price target, include all repeatable order costs and a clearly defined contribution target.
For the whole shop, reconcile account activity, including unsold inventory, subscriptions or other services you use. For a bank deposit, review available funds and the account statement. These are three different tasks, so their totals need not match.
Use the Etsy calculator as a scoped estimate. For smaller products, the under-$10 guide shows why time and fixed charges matter as much as the percentage rate.
FAQ

No. The transaction fee and Etsy Payments processing are separate. US processing is 3% plus $0.25; other bank-account countries have different schedules.
