USPS Flat Rate Box Prices: Retail and Commercial Comparison
See dated USPS Small, Medium and Large Flat Rate prices. Compare retail and commercial rates, calculate savings and check the actual label price before shipping.
Box prices in one table
| Container | Retail | Listed commercial | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Flat Rate Box | $13.65 | $12.10 | $1.55 |
| Medium Flat Rate Box | $24.80 | $21.17 | $3.63 |
| Large Flat Rate Box | $34.00 | $31.00 | $3.00 |
The table uses the official schedule checked September 5, 2026. Mailing-date changes, the label provider and your account can affect the price you actually receive. Compare like with like: the same service, container, destination eligibility and extra services.
The Flat Rate lookup also displays envelope options. Select the packaging you will use. A Padded Flat Rate Envelope and a Small Flat Rate Box are different products even when both can hold the same item.
Calculate the savings correctly
For the Medium box in this table:
Dollar difference = $24.80 − $21.17 = $3.63.
Reduction relative to retail = $3.63 ÷ $24.80 × 100 = 14.64%.
If 20 otherwise identical shipments qualify for that comparison, the postage difference is $72.60. This worked example assumes the listed prices are available and unchanged. It does not prove a particular marketplace will offer the same discount.
Use the retail amount as the denominator when describing a reduction from retail. Dividing by the lower price answers a different question: how much higher retail is than commercial.
Check packaging before price
Use the designated USPS Flat Rate container. Domestic Flat Rate packaging generally has a 70 lb limit and must close within its normal folds. A larger box is not automatically better value, and an envelope should not be selected just because its postage is lower. USPS Priority Mail requirements
Consider an order containing two protected items. If both fit safely in one Medium box, compare that single label with the complete cost of sending two parcels. Include extra packaging and any service differences. Do not remove necessary protection to make a lower-priced box appear economical.
Decide what to charge your customer
Your label cost and customer shipping charge are separate numbers. If postage is $21.17 and other packing materials cost $1.30, shipping the order costs at least $22.47 before handling labor or marketplace fees. Charging $21.17 would leave you absorbing those additional costs.
Record whether your store passes through postage, adds a disclosed handling amount, or absorbs shipping in the product price. Apply that policy consistently and keep the checkout description clear.
When this table cannot identify the cheapest service
Flat Rate has no single break-even weight against other USPS services. A light parcel in your own packaging may receive a lower weight-based quote. A dense parcel may compare differently. Get a current quote using its packed dimensions, weight and destination.
The HustleNumbers tool lists Flat Rate prices; it does not rate Ground Advantage, dimensional weight, international parcels or optional extra services. Use those separate quotes before choosing the final service. A dated price table is a planning reference, not a postage purchase or delivery commitment.
FAQ
Are online and Post Office prices the same?
Not necessarily. USPS lists retail and commercial rates, and your label provider or account may offer different eligible pricing. Compare the final quote for the same service.
Does Flat Rate always cost less for heavy packages?
No universal weight threshold applies. The packed size, service, destination and available rates determine the comparison.
Are the table prices permanent?
No. They are a dated snapshot of the July 12, 2026 schedule, checked September 5, 2026. Confirm the price for the mailing date.
