Cheapest Way to Ship a 5 lb Book: Compare the Packed Shipment

First check whether the contents qualify

USPS permits qualifying books of at least eight printed pages under its Media Mail rules. Advertising restrictions and enclosure rules apply, and USPS may inspect the parcel. A book sale does not automatically make every accessory or promotional insert eligible. Check the actual contents against the Domestic Mail Manual, especially for a bundle.

Do not use USPS Priority Mail packaging for a Media Mail shipment. Use suitable packaging for the service you buy. Protect the corners and binding, prevent movement, then record the finished weight and outside dimensions. The buyer receives the parcel, not an unwrapped book.

Compare three complete options

Do not assume the small box fits a heavy textbook. Measure after wrapping. A container that fits the bare cover with no clearance may leave the corners exposed or prevent normal closure.

Worked example: separate postage from profit

Assume a seller receives $40 for a book and $8 for shipping. The finished parcel qualifies for the 6 lb Media Mail bracket at $8.08. Packaging costs $1.20 and the book originally cost $12.

This is an illustrative order, not net business profit. Marketplace fees, advertising, returns, labor and tax may reduce what remains. Notice that charging $8 shipping does not cover the $9.28 combined postage and packing cost. The seller absorbs $1.28 before any fee assessed on the shipping charge.

Promise the service you intend to buy

Quote the buyer a service and delivery estimate you can support. Priority Mail's current published delivery window is generally 2–3 days, subject to destination and service conditions; that is not a universal delivery guarantee. USPS Priority Mail

If a buyer purchases an expedited option, do not silently substitute a slower one because the book qualifies for Media Mail. Confirm any proposed change with the buyer and follow the marketplace's rules.
