Etsy Charges 6.5% on Shipping AND Gift Wrap — Calculate Your Real Fees

The fee base most sellers underestimate

Here's the part that catches sellers off guard: Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee doesn't apply to your item price alone. It applies to the total amount the buyer pays — item price, shipping, and gift wrap combined.

If you price a candle at $30, charge $5 shipping, and add $3 for gift wrap, your transaction fee isn't 6.5% × $30 = $1.95. It's 6.5% × $38 = $2.47.

That extra $0.52 might seem small per order, but across 200 orders a month, it's $104 you didn't budget for.

Full fee breakdown on a real order

Let's run the numbers on that $30 candle with $5 shipping and $3 gift wrap:

Your payout before income tax and material costs: $38.00 − $4.31 = $33.69.

But wait — you still paid for the shipping label. If that label cost you $4.50, your actual take-home is $33.69 − $4.50 = $29.19 on a $30 item. You kept 76.8% of the item price after all fees and shipping costs.

Why "free shipping" doesn't save you

Some sellers think offering free shipping avoids the fee. It doesn't. If you raise your item price to $35 and offer "free" shipping, Etsy charges 6.5% × $35 = $2.28 on the item alone. Compare that to $30 + $5 shipping where the transaction fee is 6.5% × $35 = $2.28. Same math.

The only difference is psychological: buyers see a higher item price. Etsy's fee doesn't care how you label the charge.

Gift wrap: the fee you probably forgot

Gift wrap feels like a bonus charge, but Etsy treats it identically to shipping for fee purposes. That $3 gift wrap charge adds:

• Transaction fee: 6.5% × $3 = $0.20
• Processing fee: 3% × $3 = $0.09

Total extra fees on gift wrap alone: $0.29. You keep $2.71 of the $3 charge.

If you offer gift wrap at cost ($3) but pay $2.50 for materials and labor, your profit is $0.21 per wrapped order. Charge at least $4–$5 for gift wrap to make it worthwhile.

Worked example: pricing to protect your margin

Say your candle costs $8 in materials and you want at least $12 profit per sale.

1. Target take-home: $8 (cost) + $12 (profit) = $20 minimum.
2. Add shipping label cost: $4.50.
3. Total you need after fees: $24.50.
4. Etsy takes roughly 11.3% of the total sale price.
5. Required sale price: $24.50 ÷ (1 − 0.113) = $27.62 minimum.

So pricing at $30 + $5 shipping + $3 gift wrap ($38 total) gives you $33.69 after fees, minus $4.50 shipping cost, minus $8 materials = $21.19 profit. That clears your $12 target.
